Anthony Birchwood

I was born, I started painting, then it was now.
Since leaving college I have lived and worked in Brighton, London, Los Angeles, Sarasota, Marbella and currently in Lancaster.
I started as a modern figurative painter. But in the last five years I have returned to my roots in landscape, specialising in work associated with Morecambe Bay and the Cumbrian hills and lakes.
My primary concerns are with light, volume and the weight of weather, which I explore with pigment, resins, mixed media and oil glazes, usually on panels. I work directly with the materials and no preliminary drawing. I don't use sketches or photographs, but paint from the memory of the visual experience.
My influence are quite varied, from Masaccio to Pontormo, Turner to Sutherland, Pollock to Hodgkin. I'm not sure how the influences work, these are just artists that make me want to paint. I have held exhibitions in the UK, America and Europe and my paintings hang in numerous private collections (as well as a few public collections). My work was recently featured in the international art magazine, Oz-Art.
In 2010 I was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
