Victorian Fayre

The annual Victorian Fayre will be held on Sunday 3rd of December in Keswick this year, and is an excellent way to get into the Christmas mood, as well as ticking off on the present list. As usual we will be serving Mulled Wine in the Gallery, and look forward to seing you.

We have lots of lovely gift ideas as well as some beautiful handmade Christmas ornaments

Go Herdwick

Go Herdwick is a charity public art project in aid of the Calvert Trust.

Money raised will go towards the £1.3 million redevelopment of Old Windebrowe at Keswick, the trust’s 16th-century Grade II-listed farmhouse and tithe barn. The historic property, which was once home to William Wordsworth, will be redeveloped to provide six apartments for people recovering from strokes or who have acquired brain injuries.

Occupational therapy,rehabilitation and outdoor activities will be on offer.

Each figure has been sponsored by a business, organisation or school. Artists from Cumbria and beyond and schoolchildren have decorated the sheep so that each one is different. Cumbria Life, which is the media partner for the project, commissioned internationally renowned conceptual artist Conrad Atkinson to decorate one of the first ewes, called the Golden Fleece.

It’s anticipated that local people and visitors will take up Herdwick spotting and tick off a visit to each of the ewe figures.

‘With all the disruption caused by the flooding,we’re delighted that the Go Herdwick trail will be able to play a part in bringing tourists and locals back into the centre of the Lake District.

The flock will be out and about over the summer and will then be rounded up and displayed en masse at Rheged near Penrith from September 22 to 29. Finally,a grand auction will take place at Low Wood Bay hotel on Windermere on Saturday, October 8.

We are delighted to have sponsored one of the lambs - 'Flora', and Julie Gibson who exhibits her beautiful mosaics in the gallery, has created her into a masterpiece. We have so many people coming in to find her, and they are enthralled when they see her.

We are also lucky enough to have Jenni Payne exhibiting her Pastel paintings here, and Jenni created Florence the Zerdy - one of the ewes.

Jenni said on her completion of Florence -

'Well, Florence the Zerdy has gone off to join the Flock at the Calvert Trust as part of the Go Herdwick Public Art Trail 2016 www.goherdwick.co.uk  They'll all be out on the trail soon and Florence will sit outside the Derwent Cumberland Pop-up Shop in Keswick - one of three generously sponsored by the company.  In the autumn an auction will raise funds for this deserving local charity - it's a privilege to take part! Florence is a cousin of our native sheep and gained her stripes from the renowned haematite from Florence Mine.  I made up an acrylic paint using our own Egremont Red pigment and a special medium - so she is truly hefted!
