'Cumberland Colours' Exhibition

Our current Spotlight On Exhibition features paintings by Florence Paintmakers - a small cooperative based in West Cumbria producing hand-made artists’ materials from the remaining stocks of haematite at Florence Mine, Egremont. This mine was renowned for the quality of its ore and was the last deep haematite mine in Western Europe.

In 2012 four West Cumbrian artists, Jill Davis, Margie Foots, Jenni Payne and Liz Redmayne volunteered to develop a range of artists’ materials from the red iron oxide. They are using traditional paint-making methods and locally-sourced materials. The packaging, labelling and publicity material has been designed by local graphic designer Richard Davis. By the end of 2013, Egremont Red paint was available in art shops and galleries throughout Cumbria as well as online via the new website. In 2014, following on from the successful sales of Egremont Red watercolour and oil paint, new products such as pastels and inks are being researched and developed. Alongside this, new local pigments are being sourced. There is now a grey derived from slate mined by Burlington Slate quarries and a yellow found in the St Bees area. Both colours complement Egremont Red perfectly.

Also available throughout the exhibition is the full range of artists' materials.Members of the group will be in the gallery on Saturday 10th May, between 2p.m and 4p.m. to discuss their work, and the products. We hope you can join us.

New Artist

It is always exciting to discover a new artist and we are delighted to welcome Susan K Stevens in to the gallery. Susan's fresh and direct acrylic paintings - all painted with palette knives, fit effortlessly into our display.

'As the light begins to fade'

'Beyond here is there'

'I paint what I feel and my memory and emotions inform the final piece. I aim to produce work that is distinctive and instinctive, that holds a rawness that is genuine, honest and never contrived. I approach each painting with a desire to capture a moment only, a fragment of time capturing an impression and emotional response that is gone almost before I have time to take it all in. There is nothing hidden in my paintings, nothing kept from the viewer about the work they see or the artist that painted them.' SK Stevens

Happy New Year

The Gallery will be closed on Tuesdays, and possibly a few days through out January, so please if your visit is important, phone before hand to check opening times.

We suddenly find ourselves half way through January 2014! After the hectic run up to, and through Christmas, this is a time when we begin to prepare the gallery for a new season, and fresh work. We use this opportunity to reduce a few end of line items - so there are several bargains still to be found.

More importantly though is the new work that begins to filter into the gallery.

Out to Sea - an Acrylic by Anne Butler

Buttermere and Haystacks - a Watercolour by Tessa Kennedy

Workington Harbour - a Pen and Wash by Phil Cram

'Hare Today - Gone Tomorrow!'

The first of this year's 'Spotlight On' exhibitions is now in full swing in the gallery. The wildlife based lino prints, by Sarah Cemmick  present a breath of fresh air, with the promise of Spring just around the corner.

Sarah studied environmental illustration at Sunderland university, which started a love affair with Lino printing. She became fascinated with the line and mark-making quality Lino gave her, which allows her to stamp each of her prints with a unique individuality.

In 1998 Sarah was awarded the Lloyd's private banking award by the society of wildlife artists for her 'Rhino Lino' print.

Now living in the shadow of cross fell in the beautiful Eden valley, she is inspired by the hares, song birds and abundant furry creatures she sees around her studio and the surrounding fells.

This exhibition is an exciting opportunity to see artist proofs and editions which are close to selling out, alongside new images, hot of the press!

The exhibition runs until Sunday 18th April.
